Clarissa wishes to control her external environment and the people in it, as demonstrated by her approach to the party she is hosting. This is illustrated by the passage, indicating that Clarissa is far more at peace in her garden where she can “control” her flowers, unlike human relationships. Septicemic, by contrast, learns that he cannot control his own internal thoughts or feelings and subsequently decides to end his life.

samba refuses to say bad things about herself, nor does alison, when a spider crawls into her back of the hand, she seems calm and peaceful, so I assume we do try , try hard to know people’s characters, the way we try to find a good omen on myself….
